Interesting little plant

I tackled a patch of weeds that was put on the backburner for a while. This interesting plant was growing in clumps and I have no idea what it is - friend or foe? I left a few of them for now to see what they are going to do - you never know, it could turn out to be a beauty or perhaps a beast later!!
