Ponte della Maddalena

This wonderful, and slightly strange bridge is is on the outskirts of the village of Borgo a Mozzano. It is almost 1000 years old, built in the eleventh century. A part of its strangeness is the asymmetry of the bridge but much of that comes from relatively recent modifications to the bridge. On the left side the bridge has been raised up so the railway can pass under it, and less obviously the final arch on the right  has been slightly modified so the bridge ends at the modern road, higher than the original road.
We had a lovely day driving slowly up into the mountains through cool forest. On the way we visited Barga and found a wonderful cathedral (Duomo) at the high point of the village. It was old and full of history, but still had a very friendly and welcoming feel to it.
