Diary of an Edinburgher

Food Festival

Today we had planned to go down to the Borders for a Food Festival (dogs on leads welcome). But we had second thoughts about taking Archie when Christine offered to have him instead. No, he would have hated the journey. Though he'd‘ve loved being there - lots of dogs (two schnauzers) and lovely (foodie) smells.

And so I took him up the hill while JR went to the gym, then we popped him down with Rufus and set off. It's always a joy to go driving in the Borders. Nice windy roads, huge fields full of gorgeous hay bales, and not many cars.

The Food Festival (at Floors Castle) was quite fun (and a lot busier than it looks here). Big tents full to the gunnels with fudges, cheeses, pies and gins. All 'artisan' of course. A nice selection of food from around the world - Mexican, Italian, French, Indonesian, Greek... we got a tasty little tray of potatoes and mushrooms and joined one lady at a table. She was American, but was wearing a Canadian cap to disguise herself, so ashamed of Trump was she. We had a good chat with her. She was on a bus trip, and has been to Scotland many many times, and (seriously) wants to come and live here. The bus trip included a visit to the castle, and she gave me her unused ticket. And so I went into the castle. Glad I didn’t have to pay, because I wasn’t there long - I find all that opulence and those tapestries and china collections and dozens of family photos (somebody has to dust them) most uninteresting. JR had toured the castle a few years ago, so wasn’t keen to do it again.

It was a lovely drive, and the sun even managed to come out on the way home. I was pleased to catch the finish of the Solheim Cup.

Archie has another wee adventure tomorrow...
