Black Bryony berries

I finally got to my beloved Chilterns today, my first proper walk in 2013 - mostly around Dancersend, the nature reserve I've watched over for more than 30 years. It was dank and misty and I got some great photos of fungi, seed heads and old trees. However, when I looked through them this evening I was struck by the wonderful colours in this shot, that I hadn't completely appreciated at the time. These are the very poisonous berries of Black Bryony Tamus communis, an unsung natural wonder in our hedgerows and woodland through autumn and winter. Even on a gloomy monochrome sort of day like today there is colour to be found if you just look more closely.
