Colchicum not Crocus

Colchicum hungaricum to be precise. The striking black anthers will open to release golden yellow pollen. Look closely and you can see they are just beginning to do so.

A sudden burst of activity in the Spring bulb frame a direct result of the current mild weather. The first narcissus, the first Spring crocuses and this delicate beauty. There should be two but one of the shoots has been mown off by some critter, probably a cutworm, a soil dwelling caterpillar. These cunning devils are hard to track down, seldom residing in the pot where they do damage :(

Thanks for the good wishes yeaterday - I am feeling much brighter today.
