Another bridge
The bridge at Pooley Bridge was destroyed during Storm Desmond and was eventually replaced by a temporary bridge. Now the design for a new permanent bridge has been agreed and they are about to start putting it in place. In the meantime the road across the water to the town is closed and everyone has to go a long way round. A temporary footbridge is being put in place and should be open tomorrow. We thought we would go along, after having been in Penrith, to see how things were doing.
In the picture you can see the huge crane that we watched picking up the temporary road bridge and we assume they were then putting it on a vehicle to take it away. To the left is the entrance to the temporary footbridge, with joiners still working on it.
Pooley Bridge really suffers whilst there is no access by bridge, so everyone is hoping the new bridge is built very quickly. And maybe any lost trade might be made up for by people visiting to watch the work going on - there were certainly quite a few people having a peek . . . like us.
