Cleaning up

This concrete bench set into a roadside bank is part of Wellow history and has been spruced up by a group of local parish councillors in the Hampshire village.
It is known locally as Florence Nightingale’s bench and is now the only surviving part of an arch, once called the Sounding Arch, which crossed the road, connecting two parts of the local Embley estate where she and her family lived.
But the low bridge and its narrow arch was demolished around 53 years ago.
It was earlier this year that the local councillors decided the bench needed tidying up, clearing away leaves and debris. The bright spot will come next spring. The parish councillors say they planted the area surrounding it with spring bulbs and they plan to maintain it was a feature in the village . . .And a contemporary part of Hampshire history.
