Twelfth day of Christmas
My wonderfully, oddly superstitious mum has always insisted that it's bad luck to have Christmas decorations up past the twelfth day of Christmas. So, dutifully, I lugged the little Christmas tree, that has cheered our flat since Sinterklaasavond, down the stairs and onto the footpath to rest with the other discarded conifers in what has become a sort of roadside Christmas tree cemetery.
However, some kids down the street found a far more interesting way to dispose of their trees! As I was heading into town for Sunday Sushi this evening, I was drawn down a side street by a brilliant crackle and blaze. Flames and sparks leapt into the air in such a breathtaking way that I thought I should actually check this was a supervised bonfire and not some horrible accident!! As I drew closer, I could see a pile of Christmas tree skeletons fueling the inferno and the excited little faces of the engineers of this surprisingly explosive display!
Christmas goes out with a bang! (Or at least a snap, crackle and pop!)
