D-Day and Arnhem veteran - my pal Doug
Douglas Hibbs is 94 and still going very strong. I met him about 6 months ago when the WVS asked me to do some computer work with him and I have visited him every Monday ever since.
Today's chat started with a look at some Blips in my iPad and somehow meandered onto old cars and Doug's Ford Y. He described the car to me in loving detail and I managed to find a good picture of this 1930s classic - exactly as he described it, of course. We then talked about the first house he bought in Fulham, London for £1100 and found it on Zoopla at £1,250,000 or thereabouts.
The picture and shield in the background were presented to him just before Christmas when we visited an outpost of the Royal Signal Regiment at Cawdor Barracks. They feted him with a displays of their radio equipment and survival kit and gave us a Regimental Lunch in the Mess. Afterwards we were driven around the old Brawdy airfield where I ran the Search and Rescue helicopter flight in the early 90s - aaah, nostalgia ain't wot it used to be, yer know
