Ghost of Maison Carre!

In our first "One Street" blip we introduced part of the States Arcade.
In one corner is a rather swish restaurant called Dix Neuf so called because the building is No19 in the Arcade.
A very nice modern, French style restaurant, perfect for lunch, coffee, croissants etc when wandering in the Arcade and particularly nice on a sunny afternoon when you can sit outside.
Previously the building housed a very old teashop and bakery called Maison Carre..sadly this closed in 2003 in favour of Dix Neuf.
I remember well, as a child, queueing for fresh cream cakes each Saturday as a treat!
Guernsey people will probably remember the Maison Carre tearoom which served afternoon teas which comprised tea and a plate of shop made cakes. As I remember, the cakes stayed on the table and you just paid for what you had eaten then, when you had finished, the gaps on the cake plate was re-filled by the cafe waitress...seems rather unhygienic by todays standards but we thought nothing of it then.
Today you would think "I wonder how many little hands touched and perhaps licked that cake before I got here!".
I believe Maison Carre had been open for around 50 years before progress hastened it's demise.
I guess that is progress.
