River Calder

Today’s the day ..................... to expand

The clever thing about the the Calder & Hebble Navigation is that, wherever possible, it uses the actual River Calder instead of building a separate canal waterway.   This is not without its problems of course, because rivers tend to flood now and then – and there can be too much water about.  So it requires an additional flood gate whenever the two go their separate ways so that the canal is kept safe.

It’s a wonderful feeling though when you find yourself on the wide and majestic River Calder after the narrow constraints of the canal.  You can choose which arch of the proper bridges carrying railway and roads, you want to pass underneath.  You are allowed to go faster too on the river – so you can open up the throttle and put the boat through her paces.

Just remember to follow the signs and turn a sharp right at the end there, back into the canal.  Beyond those red floats, the river goes over a weir.  Not something recommended to try in a narrowboat .........................
