Toledo Cathedral Chapel
Today we took a pilgrimage up and down across what seemed like all of Toledo's hills, from midday to after 6 pm. First stop was Toledo's magnificent and fascinating cathedral. Constructed in gothic style from the 13th to the 15th century, it's huge, with five naves and correspondingly numerous interior sections. The blip shows the Main Chapel (Capilla Mayor), in the middle of the cathedral; its nearly blinding gilt and intense color are overwhelming. The extra shows just two of the narrative panels (there are 18 by my count), depicting Christ at the column and the Annunciation. We had lunch nearby, and then continued on to the Synagogue of El Tránsito in the Jewish quarter; it's mainly a museum. Our final stop was at the Church of Santo Tomé, for El Greco's large masterpiece, The Burial of the Count of Orgaz; it lived up totally to its billing. It was an intense and absorbing day, in a wonderful city.
