Next year’s early onions and garlic
It’s a wet Friday afternoon so usual work the allotments with brother JjvDon is ruled out. He has 2 free coffees on his Dobbies’ club card so go there to use them before the end of the month when the would be forfeited if unused. Whilst there picked up 3 packs of Autumn Planting “Japanese” Onion sets (50 sets per pack) and a pack of 3 Garlic bulbs. The sets will be planted in the next couple of weeks when weather permits as will the individual cloves from the garlic bulbs. They will initiate their growth before the cold temperatures of winter renders them dormant. As temperatures rise in early Spring growth will quickly resume and they will be ready to harvest in June next year, two or three months before Spring planted sets. The use of these autumn sets ensures self sufficiency in onions with at least one onion available for consumption every day of the year.
Whilst at Dobbies also picked up a “bargain” white berry bush (reduced from £9.99 to £0.89). Cost of the sets was £2.49 a pack and the garlic pack was £2.99. With 10% discount for club members I saved£1.14 from the bill of £11.35 - total savings of £9.24 on my purchases. Pity brother Jock had not gone to Dobbies for his Japanese sets - he paid almost £10 for the 50 sets he bought on the internet!!!
