Every September, Canadians hold a special run for cancer research in the memory of a young man who attempted to run across Canada to raise awareness and money for cancer research - with only one leg and a prosthetic. He ran an average of 42 kilometres a day (26 miles) through six provinces but after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles), Terry had to stop running as his primary cancer had spread to his lungs.
The following day, the CEO of the Four Seasons Hotel sent a telegram to the Fox family promising to continue to fight every year by organizing a run in his name. Every September, Canadians participate in runs across Canada in his name to continue his Marathon of Hope (and other parts of the world now!).
What is amazing is that Terry's goal was to raise $1 for every Canadian (24 million then) and that dream was realized five months after he had to stop running. To date, over $750 million has been raised for cancer research.
This lovely lady, is our English as a Second Language teacher, who volunteered to be in the dunk tank. For $2, students could buy 3 balls to attempt to dunk her. She got quite soaked (extra) : ))
"I guess that one of the most important things I've learned is that nothing
is ever completely bad. Even cancer. It has made me a better person. It has given me courage and a sense of purpose I never had before. But you don't have to do like I did...wait until you lose a leg or get some awful disease, before you take the time to find out what kind of stuff you're made of. You can start now. Anybody can."
