Dumbarton Rock and Castle

This iconic volcanic plug is an in-filled crater of a volcano that was active 350 million years ago. Throughout Dumbarton Castle's long history it has been a royal residence and a fortress which has had many fascinating connections from the Vikings to the Scottish Wars of Independence. Mary Queen of Scots sailed to France from here as a child.
The castle was the centre of the ancient Kingdom of Strathclyde supposedly visited by Merlin. Latterly it has served as a military base and prison.
It's an exciting place to visit with superb views over the Firth of Clyde and northwards to the highlands.
Jings, I might get a job with the tourist board after all that.
