September 30th 1939
Saturday September 30th
As the Americans commented, the Russo–German peace offer (or threat?) has proved to be a damp squib. Our Government, like Br’er Rabbit, are lying low and ain’t sayin nuthin?
Hitler’s attitude is like that of Claudius in Hamlet – “May one be pardoned and retain the offence?”*
And so passes September, a month that has seen the fall of a nation. One can hardly look forward to October with any pleasurable anticipation.
Warsaw is to be occupied tomorrow.
*Hamlet Act 3, scene 3.
