Greening

I don't know the exact ins & outs of the EU subsidies in agriculture but know that money can be had for what is called "Greening" in Germany - protection of meadows & the use of inter/catch-cropping on arable land.

This particular field had, after its primary cereal crop was harvested, been sown with a simple mix of various seeds that will not be harvested but simply improve the soil structure & provide natural nitrogen stores in the roots which will save on artificial fertilisers.

Sadly seen too seldom. Presumably as so much of the arable land around here is maize/corn where everything seems to be easier/cheaper with artificial methods. Shame particularly as the flowers are a wonderful bonus for bees & flying insects at this time of year before the hard frosts come. And presumably so long as the crop is growing, it is taking in CO² and looks a lot nicer than stubble.

On the evening walk ......again!
