Pears to spare
Our little £5 mystery tree that had lost its name tag in the garden centre has paid us back well. Having ascertained some time back that it was a pear tree we have spent the summer watching its fruits grow.
Just before we set off on holiday we checked them and found they weren't quite ripe so, reluctantly and somewhat anxiously we decided to leave them until we got back. We had visions of a drought crisping the whole garden and drying out our little tree but we seem to have returned to flood warnings rather than drought. The watering from the air has produced nearly two and a half kilos of fruit picked so far, and still more to pick. Unfortunately the poor little pear tree has had two of its branches broken by sheer weight of fruit (and probably rain and wind) despite my efforts to support them earlier on. Still judicious pruning should get it back into shape and if it shows signs of producing so many next year I think we will have to consider some thinning out.
