Pear Rust

Pear Rust caused by the amazing Gymnosporangium sabinae rust fungus. The bright orange spots appear on the tops of the leaves in late summer and then the strange growths start to develop on the underside of the leaf in the autumn. The astonishing thing is that the spores cannot reinfect pear but instead require juniper to continue their life cycle. In spring the growths on juniper will then release spores that infect the new pear leaves. I find that quite amazing.
