Finally a Wild Stag
..... on the north side of the Dents du Midi. Year after year, in October, I go to listen to the stags bellowing in a high mountain valley where the hunters are not allowed. It is incredible to hear the calls of these majestic beasts echoing from one side of the valley to the other. Sometimes I have seen and heard distant movements in the forest, but I have never actually seen any till today! Of course I am delighted. Extras include very old stag who has lost an antler, a couple of females running towards the loudest stag, a couple of chamois who seemed very unfazed by all the shenanigans, and finally a fox and a chamois about 10m apart! The latter is so rare it would have been my blip on any other day. The fox walked away from the chamois who continued grazing calmly. A fabulous National Geographic walk!
When I got home I finished digging over the vegetable garden, just a few raspberries and tomatoes left now, before the rain came in. Just sitting down to a Thai takeaway, we have both had a very active day. Tomorrow it can rain!
