A Thelma and Louise Day- Shetland Day 4

Another Thelma and Louise day for Poppy and me as we hit the road with our trusty red hire car for the southern reaches of the mainland. We were heading for Hoswick and the visitor centre, taking in a couple of knitwear outlets on the way. I have include 2 extra pictures I took there of a dry stane dyke being built and a class of spinners carding their fleeces.

The weather had been fine until we started out from Hoswick to go to Bigton Community Hall for lunch with 60° North and his good lady and for Poppy to attend a class in whittling in the afternoon. Then, what we thought was a shower that would soon blow over turned into an afternoon of heavy rain.
It was lucky that just before it got too wet for comfort, we saw a pod of Orca whales in the sea near St Ninan’s Isle. It’s just a pity all you will get to see is a far away fin but only if you have good eyesight.

We has a really lovely time chatting over lunch with 60°North and his wife before Poppy disappeared to whittle. I was really appreciative of them keeping me company for more than an hour afterwards as I waited for my lift home.

By the time that happened, it was pouring rain and the windscreen wipers were working overtime. Still, we had time and the inclination to stop and get wine to accompany our doggy bag of food negotiated for with the lunch ladies.

A lovely day , and so enjoyable to meet up again with 60°North and be introduced to the lady in his life.
