Florentine Boar
This rather fine looking beast is one of the most prominent features in Derby Arboretum.
In 1806 Joseph Strutt, the Derby industrialist and philanthropist, commissioned W J Coffee to make a ceramic copy of the Florentine Boar in Florence's Mercato Nuovo. It was originally located in the gardens of his house, but when he donated the Arboretum to the people of Derby in 1840, it was transferred to the Arboretum. It remained there until World War II when it was severely damaged and then removed.
This bronze replica was made as part of the 2002 refurbishment of the Arboretum.
