The Magnificent Seven

The second of the seven films that in some way affected me as I was growing up is (chronologically speaking) the 1960 version of the ‘Magnificent Seven’, itself a remake of Kurosawa’s 1954 七人の侍 (Seven Samurai), a far better film artistically but that’s not what this listing is about.
It’s not hard to see why an adolescent would be enthralled by this movie – it ticks all the boxes, and has iconic (read ‘cool and heroic’ performances) by such macho stars as Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson and James Coburn). And of course Yul Brynner foreshadowing his Westworld role. It is easy to follow: people are good or bad, and somehow the gun for hire becomes someone to be admired and respected. No shades of grey here, but hey … they were different times.
The classic memory of this movie is when Brynner and McQueen volunteer to take a hearse up to Boot Hill. In this short scene we have everything the western (and this film) is about. Watch for yourself at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjEcOkwV2MU.
The film was apparently remade recently for another generation but for the sake of my memories I decided not to see it.
