Awards

The fifth year of the South African Breweries Social Innovation and Disability Empowerment Awards and I have been privileged to be at every one of them.

Some pretty impressive ideas were rewarded with oodles of cash making one young man in particular fall to his knees.

He makes chairs for kids with disabilities who need extra support to remain upright. Living in a rural area with limited access to electricity and using mostly scrap material, he first constructs the chairs using glue made from flour and water in a big pot on a fire before it is all finally screwed together, painted and straps added.

His total prize money - R1.45 million and a further year of mentorship and coaching.

It may have been an exceptionally long day but great to finish it in the company of inspiring people.
