A day in the life

Iron age

Iron age. That's a long time ago. In Scandinavia it starts from about 500 BC and goes on till about 1100 A:D. Somewhere in that timespan this house was inhabited by one or more families, children, men and women living their lives together in this little village, now called "Old Skogsby". Most certainly it had a different name back then, unknown to us today. Here lived a very wealthy man, probably one of the many "Kings" or "Chiefs" on the island. There is a long-house, one of the largest around and lots of house grounds and stone fences for cattle and farming.Quite a large settlement.

This excavating is made by the university of Kalmar. It's a test-digging to try and learn more about the importance of this place in Ölands history and what it was like living here. The group of archeologists has just started working  and the diggings are supposed to go on for a couple of weeks. Then, maybe continue in spring or further along in time.

I find this very interesting. Not only because it's on my backyard from where I live but also because I'm genuinely interested in the historic events that leads all the way from these pieces of rock to myself and beyond. I guess not much has happened in the way we look at things now compared to then. We probably wanted to live in peace and security, feed our families, grow our crops and  keep our animals. Probably we would also be careful towards strangers who maybe wanted to harm us. What this excavating is about is to examine the daily life for the people calling this place "home".
