A day early and a dollar short
I went downtown to photograph the reception for 'ALTARES Y MUERTOS’, curated by IdeAL PDX, the largest Latino Artists Collective in the Portland area. Having missed the reception for Orquidia’s work last week, I wanted to redeem myself by making some lovely portraits of the artists with their work in the background. The space was open, the art was hung and arranged—beautiful altars and stunning paintings—but no one was there.
I was a day early. I can’t go to the reception tomorrow because I’m taking care of Bella and Evan.
One of the altars includes a tiny pair of brown shoes, which is my segue to what I can reward you with: a link to Aimee Sitarz’ story of her trip to the California/Mexico border and her intention to hang some bronze shoes there. It’s a tale of suspense amplified by landscapes that show how harsh and dangerous the borderlands are. There’s even a baby rattlesnake being startled by its shadow.
