Mariazell

I was up before sparrow's to go on a bus trip with the girls. If it sounds like I do a lot without Hubby I have to say he doesn't mind and is glad I have friends over here to do things with. It is not all the time and he only 8 weeks left at work before retiring.
We started out in the dark and cold but it turned out a glorious day. Half way we caught the narrow gauge electric train from St Pölten to Mariazell. The landscape is so pretty and the autumn colours are coming out. The main blip was taken through the window and shows the Ötscher, a ski and trekking area, in the distance. I missed an earlier, more spectacular view by being too slow. At the end of the line the bus took us to the town of Mariazell, a ski area, Catholic pilgrim destination and famous for its Lebkuchen. We were in time for the morning mass at the Basilica so I left the other girls to it and took some photos outside. The extras show some of the ornate doors and the view to the ski area where we wanted to go for lunch. We walked to the cable car but were disappointed to see that it was closed for renovations. We had lunch in the town and it was very good but lacked the spectacular views of the restaurant on the mountain.
On the way home we stopped at a Heuriger for an early evening meal. We were so full after lunch that one of my friends and I shared a cold platter which turned out to be a good decision.
