The search goes on
As I was in Carlisle today, I returned to the Denton Holme area and continued the search for the Decorative Plaques, set into the Flood Defences built after the Carlisle Floods in 2005.
I walked along the riverside path as it made its way into the centre of the city; a new path constructed as part of the Flood Alleviation Scheme and now obviously much used by walkers and cyclists.
What is becoming clear in this quest is that each one of the forty plaques is a little work of art, carefully designed by a local artist drawing on the ideas of the local community. There are several themes, for example local businesses, river wildlife, as well as those that tell the story of the floods.
Right at the end of my walk today, I found this one, called the Kettle of Hope. I think the ideas here are self-explanatory. There would have been a lot of kettles boiled for cups of tea, as people made homeless by the floods relied on friends, family and the local community to give them shelter. The wall is the flood defence built to protect the homes and businesses by the river. The bridge is one of the main bridges over the river and leads to the centre of Carlisle. It was strange seeing from below a bridge that I have walked over and driven over countless times.
And yes, that is a blue sky!! A beautiful day today, much welcome after all the gloom of recent days. And a fantastic sunset. I think there will be a few more blipped sunsets again tonight!
Look large to see the plaque properly.
