A grand day out
Just staggered in from a stone circle exploration day - Finola organising, Robert driving, Himself navigating and me just enjoying myself! We have been wending around the bye roads above Rosscarbery, six stone circles and a stone row bagged. Multiple stone circles in case you were wondering, each with a recumbent stone ( one laid horizontal) facing two portal stones often placed at an angle. All were in pretty good condition except one which had once had 19 stones, now down to 13 and was completely covered in bracken and brambles. All were in close proximity to each other and I couldn't help but wonder why so many stone circles were needed and what on earth were they doing in them. Finola had her handy alignment app on hand and most seemed to be aligned to the Autumn equinox, I think. This was the last one we visited, Reenascreena. It has 13 stones and unusually is surrounded by a fosse, or ditch, usually full of water as it was today - a bit like a moat. A small quartz stone is in the centre. It has been excavated and was found to have two pits in the middle containing fragments of cremated bone. It is in an incredible position on top of a hill and seemed to have been surrounded by a field of flax.
A grand day out.
