Sucking .....
..... lemons.
Wednesdays are cake night at my house and this evening's was attended by the P's, Mr M and Alison.
At this evenings cake night I thought we could try something a bit different. Last week on QI they tried miracle fruit tablets which make sour fruits taste sweet, so I ordered some from ebay.
After the usual round of cake we all tried tasting various sour and sharp fruits including Lemon, lime, pineapple, grapefruit and kumquats all of which made most of us wince ( all exept Mrs P who likes sour and sharp foods ). After the first tasting we all had a miracle fruit tablet which you allow to disolve on your tounge for a few minutes.
We then tried all the fruits again. It was a strange experience, the lemon tasted like it had been drenched in sugar and wasnt sharp at all. The same applied to all the other fruits. Everyone was munching away on lemons and limes quiet happily. We then tried some balsamic vinegar which tasted like syrup but still had the sharp kick at the back of the throat.
After about 15 minutes the effect of the berry tablets wears off and you can taste the sharp and sour again ( I now feel like I have heartburn from all the acidic fruit and vinegar ).
It's also been about a month since I've seen Alison properly to chat to as she spent three weeks traveling around SE Asia before Christmas and then I was in London over Christmas and she was in Ireland for New Years. Tonight was the first chance we had to swap Christmas gifts. I had printed up a photo of her cat Millie and had framed it, Alison had bought me a nice picture frame and some seasoned cuttlefish tentacles from Thailand that look a bit like a big block of peanut brittle.
We opened the cuttlefish tentacles to try. They smell like the fish flakes I feed my tropical fish but are covered in honey and chilli flakes and have that sweet, spicy, fishy Asian ( aquired ) taste. Alison pulled more of a face eating the tenticles than she did here sucking on the lemon.
It's been a fun evening but I've a feeling everyone is going to be cursing me when all the acidy and spicy sweet fishy tastes and smells repeat on them tomorrow.
So today's blip is ......
..... Sucking lemons.
