A is for Aberdeen!!

Aberdeen - My home town, what else could A stand for on my first day on "Alphabet Blipping". Although not originally from Aberdeen, I've been here for 13 years now and to me it's home now.

Aberdeen is Scotland's third largest city with an official population estimate of 202,370. It has many nicknames including the Granite City and the Silver City with the Golden Sands. This is because many of the buildings are made from granite from local quarries. When the sun hits the buildings, it sparkles like silver. However, when it rains, the whole city looks grey!!

The area has also more recently become known as the Oil Capital of Europe or the Energy Capital of Europe due to many of the major players in the global oil & gas sector having head offices in Aberdeen.

The city is home to 2 universities, Aberdeen University and The Robert Gordon University.

And lastly, Aberdeen has won the Britain in Bloom contest ten times which is more than any other city. As the year goes on I'll be Blipping the reasons why it wins!
