Zillah Maud Baird

This is a portrait of my Godmother, Zillah Maud Baird (Silva) (1906 –1995) painted in 1942 by my aunt – my mother’s sister.
 
 
Zillah was born on this day in 1906. In the picture she is wearing her favourite opals – the birthstone for October.
 
Here is a fun factoid.
 
In those 1940s, our families were obviously intertwined, and in the early days of meeting my wife, we discovered that Zillah’s husband “Scotty” was not only my Godfather but also that of my then girlfriend, now wife.
 
All the families moved in the same circles.
 

Scotty was thus the obvious choice for an omnibus speech at our wedding.
