Old Door

At Katinen Manor you will find this battered door with a history. It is said that during the Finnish Civil War of 1918 the incumbents of the Manor, who were Whites were beseiged by a detachment of Reds. Refuge was sought in the old outbuilding and in their efforts to bayonet their way inside the Reds left the door looking a bit the worse for wear. I have no idea whether they managed to get in or not and it's not easy to find out. There are many unhealed scars here yet after the Civil War
A far cry from Ireland where a very bitter Civil War just a handful of years later has left two political parties with more or less the same policies and just about nothing else. It's interesting to note that the Irish Civil War was fought by two sides taking different attitudes to the partition of Northern Ireland, and issue which is still haunting the British establishment to this day. It is after all right at the heart of the Brexit debacle although I do not think that many British people realize that they left Ireland with a very savage and merciless Civil War. It is to the credit of the Irish that the whole thing just isn't an issue any more. Being a modern, forward looking people, the Irish are much more interested in playing their part in the forward advance of society than in dwelling over much on past differences.
