Today's the day ……………………. for a guided tour
We were fortunate today to be taken on a tour of the Tongland Hydro-electric Power Station - just up the road from us.
The idea of guided tours for the general public was something that was present right from the start when the Galloway Hydro-electric Scheme was conceived back in the 1930s. But despite the fact that the three 11,000 kilowatt turbine-generators at Tongland are still reliably producing electricity today, the public interface side of things has been allowed to slip. Hopefully, this is something that the new owners - Drax Power Group - are going to put right.
But today, we took the chance to have a quick look round with a former work colleague and friend of Will, who now works for Drax. It was fascinating too. This array of switches, levers and monitors - looking like something out of Dr Who's TARDIS - is a relic from the past. Still looks pretty impressive though ………………………...
