Here’s Looking At You!

My propensity for noticing a tiny praying mantis nymph out of the corner of my eye as I’m walking past is really surprising me. This little fella was peering up at me from below several layers of grass leaves. He was peering at the camera anyway. Mantis eyes are complex, which makes them appear to be always looking at you looking at you even though they aren’t. I have found that when they are really looking at you they turn their heads to face you directly.

Three days ago there was snow on the ground. Today there was hot sunshine and the temperature was over 22ºC. I’m either shivering or sweltering.
