NELSON

This is a view from Birchen Edge, near Chesterfield across the Derbyshire Dales.

The monument is to Admiral Nelson, who died in 1805 (must have been a huge tide as the sea is over 70 miles away !)

It took London 60 years to erect a monument yet this one was erected in 1810. A short distance away there are three gritstone rocks, shaped like the prows of ships. Each one is carved with the name of a British Fighting Ship - Victory, Defiance and Royal Sovereign.
