Between fen and mountains

Le Dragon de Calais

It was raining hard and blowing a gale when we arrived in Calais, so much so that all the ferry crossings have been cancelled. It is a good job we are booked on the tunnel tomorrow. Our hosts suggested we brave the elements and visit the Dragon of Calais. It is a tourist initiative in an attempt to rebuild the town’s reputation after years of bad press regarding migrant problems. Many car parks had been set aside and thousands had attended yesterday but the weather was putting people off. The Dragon was supposed to strut its stuff and walk the streets at 6pm but the winds were so violent that the perambulation was postponed until 7pm. There are several videos of it in action online. We decided not to wait another two hours but to seek the shelter and comfort of our Airbnb and watch it on YouTube!
