And We're Off..

The River Severn estuary was teeming with life today - the sunshine catching the water ripples on the flats made for a heavenly atmosphere and stunning view.

In the winter the white-front is the most common grey goose in the west of Britain. These were part of a large flock feeding on the fields just off the estuary and came swooping in for a brief visit, flying in grey goose V-formation. Like greylags they will dive spiralling from a great height but when alarmed they can rise almost vertically from the ground and also 'reverse engines', nearly coming to a dead stop!

Almost as soon as these white fronted geese landed with a lovely whoosh of their wings, something spooked them and they took to the skies again filling the air with an almost laughing call. Come spring they will head off back to the Arctic, from Greenland to Siberia, to breed.
