Goldfinches and a tit competing

It was a definitely a competition between them. The goldfinches had taken up residence on the sunflower feeder and gobbled away, after some posturing, wing flapping and even squawking with wide open beaks.

Several tits ventured near and some even landed and made a quick grab for a seed. This tit managed a few attempts and grabbed a seed before heading off.

They were behaving true to form as tits seldom eat at the feeder and goldfinches generally stay there as long as possible and stuff their faces. The light was a bit tricky as the sun was beginning to get low in the sky and the shadows became hard to expose. I had several types of shot and had thought of showing other posturing, but in the end this appealed most. I did notice when reviewing the images that their eyes were looking at me a lot of the time. I suppose it is necessary to be alert all the time as a sparrowhawk might appear out of the blue swooping low over the hedges. I'm not sure what impression they get from the camera. Perhaps the lens glints at them.

I should add that the white speck below them is not an aberration but a bit of sunflower seed chaff. Finches like a good chew and do seem to spit out that outer casing of the seed.
