Martha Gold Mine

This open cast mine is in the middle of the town of Waihi. Up until 2016 it was operatational but 2 large landslides stopped the mining activities and there are now plans to redevelop the area as a recreation area. There is still Gold Mining in and around Waihi but it is all underground now.
The extra photo is of the Pumphouse built in 1904 and used to pump water from the mine. It was originally built in a different location and in 2006 the old building was strengthen with bracing ready to move 300 metres.  It took 3 months to move along Teflon coated concrete beams to its present location and is now a tourist attraction.
The weather packed in today so we have headed home.
