Susanna Catharina Smit

We had a bit of a lazy breakfast and resisted the temptation to stay for lunch given that we felt that we had being doing nothing but eat since we arrived.

We took a bit of a detour to Retief Klip where Debora Retief, daughter of voortrekker Piet Retief, painted his father's name on the rock at Kerkenberg, Eastern Free state to commemorate his 57th birthday on 12 November 1837

From there we wandered along Retief Pass where this statue of Susanna Catharina Smit stands with the KZN valley below her.  She was the sister of Gerrit Maritz, who claimed that she would prefer to walk barefoot over the Drakensberg than under a British flag.  Ironically Susanna died in Natal and never did walk barefoot across the berg.

It is a pretty impressive statue that we had visited before but this was a first for the Bungs.  It was blowing a fine hooley so not somewhere to hang around for long.

Our arrival home was met with the usual raucous welcome from Shiv and Tundy which is always nice.

Two and a half days to work and then we are off again.  No complaints from me!
