Fittie on a Dreich Day

Goodness it was cold down at the seaside today. The thermometer said it was 3 degrees but the wind was cold and it felt far less. There were an amazing number of ships moored a little way offshore, not sure I have ever seen so many.

In order to escape the wind I ventured into Footdee (Fittie) the former fishing village just next to the harbour. The village is built on a regular grid pattern and the houses all face inwards. Sure enough it was much more sheltered, and felt more like the true temperature. No wonder it was designed that way.

When the village was first occupied a number of illegal constructions were built which more or less occupied all the green space inside the grid pattern of the village. The council eventually ordered the villagers to stop building these constructions, the existing buildings were allowed to remain, there was not much more space for more in any case.

The buildings vary in style, and many of today's occupants (no longer fishermen) make the sheds very ornate and highly decorated. This one is not so ornate but does have a well cared for garden.

Having had my daily exercise, not very much on this occasion as it was too cold, I retired to a supermarket to warm up!
