Greater Spotted Woodpecker

Great Spotted woodpeckers are common in woodland and come readily to feeders. They have a crimson patch under the tail, a clearly defined black and white back and spotted wings. Males have a red patch on the back of the head, while females do not. The Lesser Spotted variety is much smaller, scarce and rarely seen. This specimen was feeding at the Scottish Wildlife reserve at Dunkeld.
