Moment of clarity...

I love to know how things work. Even if I just have a basic understanding rather than every minute detail, I'm happy.

One thing that I never worked out and didn't really have any way of finding out, was how these new multi-storey car parks can display exactly how many spaces they have on each level.

Possible solutions in my mind were, pads under each car space, a man in a security office looking at several monitors estimating the number of spaces. None of these sat well in my mind.

Today, I noticed something whilst leaving the car park at FerryToll that I've probably seen every single day I've been there but never paid it any heed. It was in that instance that I had my moment of clarity. That explained those signs. There is a yellow and black strip at the entrance, exit and all up and down ramps. With these strips counting cars passing them, a simple wee computer program counting the cars in and out of each section of carpark and hey presto, exact spaces free on each level.
