The Old Forge (Sunday 17th November 2019)

Pelargoniums in the porch.

Too much to do around the property to be out and about in this November weather.

Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Lou Donaldson - Ode To Billie Joe (recorded 27 October 1967, Rudy Van Gelder's Studio, Englewood Cliffs NJ)
Lou Donaldson (alto sax), Lonnie Smith (organ), Jimmy Ponder (guitar), Idris Muhammad (Leo Morris)(drums)
On Friday BBC4 broadcast a documentary on the history of the Blue Note record label. It was a very enjoyable and instructive piece, rich with archive clips and interviews, notably with Lou Donaldson. His version of Ode To Billy Joe is the most sampled piece of music so far, have featured in 201 songs to date. The original, by Bobbie Gentry, was recorded in March 1967 and released that July, so this rendition must have been one of the first.
The song led to a film and countless covers, and was parodied by Bob Dylan with the Band that same autumn as Clothes Line Saga (originally Answer To Ode) in the Big Pink basement, released on The Basement Tapes in 1975. The shocking event buried in all the mundane details is the revelation that "The Vice-President's gone mad!".
