Edelweiss

Up earlyish this morning, and away to My Hutt where we were going to look for alpine plants.
It is up in the mountains, and in the winter it is one of the close ski fields to Christchurch. We had heard that the weather was not going to be the best but we thought that we would still go. Well it was blowing a gale up there, and raining in skiffs. We only went part way up, and decided that it was not worth being blown off the mountain today! But we still managed to find a few plants at the height that we were.
This is the NZ Edelweiss.
South Island edelweiss (Leucogenes grandiceps) is one of four species of native edelweiss, all found in alpine habitats. Their common name derives from the close similarity of their flowers to those of the European edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum). They all have yellow-brown disc florets surrounded by woolly white bracts.
