Celebration

Quite a day. One I had never expected would happen. One of pride. Of being humbled at the honour. Of excitement and privilege. Of amazement. Of family. At points tinged with sadness for those I can no longer share the experience with. But nevertheless a memorable one.

After yesterday’s travel hiatus today went smoothly. The taxi got through the security checks quickly and we processed through into Buckingham Palace. The Duke of Cambridge - or I should say the Earl of Strathearn - was officiating. He was engaging and relaxed which made all the recipients feel comfortable.

The event is a well oiled machine and everyone very helpful. I met a member of a Nobel prize winning team; a snooker commentator; someone who has developed support for elite sportsmen; a helper of refugees and asylum seekers researchers; people from higher education, the military and public service. A wide range of backgrounds and ages with many women receiving awards. There was one other Scot in a kilt from Inverclyde!

Lots of photos. Non-official ones allowed only in the courtyard and as an exception to blip rules I’ve included one from the camera on timer of us all. And a point of detail from the courtyard canopy.

Then off to The Goring dining room to join my brother and wife and our daughter’s fiancée for cocktails (the main blip) and a lovely afternoon lunch in sumptuous surroundings.

A quiet evening trying to keep up with the various kind messages of congratulations.

Quite a day!
