Twins
Almost identical. But not quite.
Others other than their mother
can tell them apart. One,
you might say, is average.
The other is very bright.
The room lights up when he enters it.
He illuminates the dark places.
He brings a smile to dour faces.
But, in doing so, turns his twin
into a duller version of himself.
When one outshines the other,
and it’s you who is the dismal
dowdy one, it must be tempting to
move away, to start anew, so you
cease being regarded as the lesser one of two.
