Smug puppy mummy
For those of you who follow my Blip regularly, you will know that a couple of weeks ago I stole a ball off a little Cockerpoo and I wouldn't give it back. The Cockerpoo's owner was angry with me and he eventually walked off without the ball. Ever since then Ann has carried a ball in her pocket so that if I ever do that again, at least she has a ball that she can give the owner.
I love playing with balls. I'm not actually allowed to play with them all the time because puppies should really wait until all their bones are formed properly before they do lots of jumping around to catch balls. However I like playing with balls more than I like playing with other puppies. And because Ann is a very clever puppy mummy she decided to incorporate ball playing into my recall training.
My recall isn't actually too bad, apart from when I'm playing with other puppies. And then I refuse to come back. For the last week or so my recall has been perfect, even when I've been playing with puppies. Ann is sooooooo pleased with me.
What happens is............................... I get to play with puppies for a while and then when Ann wants me back, she squeaks my squeaky ball and shouts, 'Trixie come'. I have to stop playing straight away and go back to Ann. And then I'm allowed 3 or 4 chases after my squeaky ball. And the thing is; because playing with a ball is my most favourite game in the world, I come back straight away.
For the last week or so I've been practising this every time I've been playing with puppies and the other puppy parents have been so impressed with how good my recall is. Today I was playing with an 8 month old puppy and a 7 month old puppy. The other puppy parents were calling and calling their puppies but we were all having too much fun to go back to our owners.
But then Ann squeaked my squeaky ball and shouted, 'Trixie come', and I went racing back to her. The other puppies followed me so their owners were able to capture them and put them back on their leads. Because I'd gone straight back to Ann I was allowed to play with my squeaky ball and stay off my lead for the whole of the time in the park.
And then one of the other puppy parents said to Ann, 'Wow, that is so impressive. How have you trained her to do that?'
…..................And that is why Ann is feeling like a very smug puppy mummy today!!!
