A pagan song
I sometimes think of all futile things
That man has ever fashioned
War comes first
Pain and all sorrow are the gifts it brings
And yet we seem to love this thing accursed
Both sides call down their very gods to witness
That they, and they alone, are in the right
And yet if that were so and both were honest
There'd be no reason and no cause to fight
If both are right, then neither side can lose
And neither win, therefore why fight at all?
And both sides say the gods are on their side
And yet one side must lose, one banner fall
It is perchance a ruse the gods employ
They first make mad those whom they would destroy
